Rachol Fort, Goa

About Rachol Fort, Goa 

Rachol Fort is located in the small village called Rachol, in South Goa. It is located adjacent to the Rachol Seminary. It is around 7 km from Margao city. The fort is built out of laterite stones and offers very scenic surroundings. This fort was controlled by many Indian rulers until the Portuguese took control over the fort. As the Portuguese expanded their empire this fort fell from favor and was finally abandoned. Now nothing remains of it today except the stone archway which leads to the seminary.

Corjuem Fort, Goa

About Corjuem Fort, Goa 

Corjuem Fort is located around 4 km from the village of Aldona on the island of Corjuem, North Goa. From Panjim city it is around 12 km away. Corjuem is well connected with mainland Aldona by a cable suspension bridge. This bridge is the only suspension bridge in Goa and is major tourist attraction by itself. This fort is smaller than the other forts in Goa, but it gives a good view of the surrounding river and land. This fort was made out of pitted laterite stones. It has a small chapel within the fort. This fort used to protect the Portuguese from tthe Marathas, Rane Rajputs and the Bhonsles. This fort is in ruins but it does offer you a chance to experice histroy as you take a walk through this ancient fort.

Cabo De Rama Fort, Goa

About Cabo De Rama Fort, Goa

The Cabo De Rama Fort is located in Canacona taluka, which lies in South Goa. It is around 25 km from Margoa city. It is one of the oldest forts in Goa, built before the arrival of the Portuguese. There is a church within the fort which is still in use. However there is very little of the fort's grandeur to be seen now. This fort offers a breath taking view of Goa, so if you are interested in history and ancient architectures this fort is a must visit.

Chapora Fort, Goa

About Chapora Fort, Goa 

The Chapora fort lies at a distance of approximately 20-25 kms from Panjim. It is close to the Anjuna beach. The fort is easily accessible from Vagator over the hill leading to the fort. This fort is now in ruins. This fort was constructed in 1617 by the Portuguese invaders by demolishing an earlier Muslim structure. The fort is built out of red laterite stones. From this fort one gets and amazing view of the ocean and the surrounding areas. This fort became famous among the tourist after the Bollywood "Dil Chahata Hai" was shot.

Terekhol Fort (Tiracol Fort), Goa

About Terekhol Fort (Tiracol Fort), Goa 

The Terekhol Fort, also known as Terekhol Fort, is built on the bank of Terekhol River. It was constructed by the Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the king of Sawantwadi during the 17th century. This fort was later taken over by the Portuguese when they ruled over Goa. Within the fort there is a church of St. Antony. The fort was used as a base for freedom fighters during the liberation of Goa in 1961. The Terekhol fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel, the Terekhol Fort Heritage. The church is mostly closed during the year and is not open to the general public except on certain occasions such as the annual feast that is usually held in the month of May. To get to this fort you will need to head towards the North side of Goa. It is about 45 km away from the capital city of Panaji.

Reis Magos Fort Goa

About Reis Magos Fort Goa 

Reis Magos fort was built by Adil Shah as a smaller fort in 1497 and destroyed by the Portuguese in 1510. The Portuguese later rebuilt the fort on a bigger scale in 1543. In 1900 this fort was turned into a jail. The water supply for the fort is provided from a fresh water spring within the fortress and it has many underground rooms and passages. This Fort stands on the banks of the river Mandovi at Reis Magos, and is visible from Panaji. This fort is currently among the few well preserved forts of Goa. It was recently restored at a cost of around 3.5 crores.

Fort Aguada, Sinquerim - North Goa

About Fort Aguada, Sinquerim, Goa

Fort Aguada is an old Portuguese fort near the Sinquerim beach. This fort is well preserved. The Aguada fort was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to guard against attacks from the Dutch and the Marathas. There is a fresh water spring within the fort. The forts spring was used to supply water to the ships that used to pass by. That's how the fort got its name. "Aguada" meaning water. On the fort also stands an old Portuguese lighthouse, erected in 1864 and is one of the oldest of its kind in Asia. Aguada Fort overlooks the vast expanses of Arabian Sea and is an excellent place to visit during sunset. Some part of this fort is converted to Central Jail.
