About Terekhol Fort (Tiracol Fort), Goa
The Terekhol Fort, also known as Terekhol Fort, is built on the bank of Terekhol River. It was constructed by the Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the king of Sawantwadi during the 17th century. This fort was later taken over by the Portuguese when they ruled over Goa. Within the fort there is a church of St. Antony. The fort was used as a base for freedom fighters during the liberation of Goa in 1961. The Terekhol fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel, the Terekhol Fort Heritage. The church is mostly closed during the year and is not open to the general public except on certain occasions such as the annual feast that is usually held in the month of May.
