About Se Cathedral Old Goa

The Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, known as Se Cathedral, is the cathedral of the Latin Rite Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the seat of the Patriarch of the East Indies. Located in Old Goa, India, the largest church in India is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria. It is one of the oldest and most celebrated religious buildings in Goa and is one of the largest churches in Asia.

Curtorim Church Goa

About Curtorim Church Goa

The Curtorim Church was erected in 1597 and is amongst the oldest churches in Salcete. This church is situated on the banks of Angddi tollem. The church was rebuilt in 1647 and St. Alex was declared the titular Saint of the Church by an Apostolic Brief on 13 January 1815.

Maquinez Palace Goa - Our Lady of Victory Chapel

About Our Lady of Victory Chapel, Panjim

The Palace of Maquinezes also houses an 18th century chapel which was built in 1720 and dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Doris (Our Lady of Sorrows). It was a private chapel of the Maquinez Palace. Subsequently, in 1781 the chapel was repaired and re-constructed and dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Victoria (Our Lady of Victory). The chapel houses an 18th century exquisitely decorated teak wood altar with gilded work dedicated to Christ. This chapel is still open to public today and it continues to have masses. Adjacted to the chapel is the head office of the Diocesan Family Service Centre(DFSC)


Chapel Of Our Lady of the Mount - Old Goa

About Chapel Of Our Lady of the Mount, Old Goa
This chapel was build after the victory portuguese nobleman Alfonso de Albuquerque over Adil Shah. Alfonso de Albuquerque first launched his attack to take possession on Goa in March 1510. But this attempt was not successful. He launched his second attack attack on Goa on November 25, 1510. He was successfully in taking possession of Goa from Adil Shah in this attempt. The chapel on our lady of the Mount was build many years after the conquest of Goa to mark the places where Adil Shah's artillery had taken position. This chapal is situated on a hill. This chapel was restored to his past glory in 2001. The chapel is brightly white washed. To reach this chapel one would have to travel for around 1.5 kms on the small mud road from the Old Goa circle. This this chapel one gets a breathtaking view. You can see the entire view of Old Goa. You also get a view of Divar and Chorao islands and the Mandovi River. Below are some pictures of the beautiful chapel.




San Jacinto Island Goa

About San Jacinto Island
San Jacinto island is located on the way to or from the Dabolim airport via Cortalim. In this lovely little island you will see a number old houses and also a magnificent church. One gets a panoramic view of Goa from this island.  One can visit this island in the evenings to experience the calm and peace present at this island. The chapel at this island is beautifully illuminated in the nights.  In the middle of the island  is a old spring, still used by the local people for their drinking water.








Holy Spirit Church, Margao, Goa

About Holy Spirit Church, Margao, Goa

Margao is the capital and buzzing commercial center of South Goa and the Holy spirit Church stands tall in the old Market square. It was originally built by the Jesuit missionaries in 1564 but was destroyed in 1571 by the Muslim army soldiers. It was then re built in 1645. It took 30 years to complete the church building that we have today. Inside the church there is a rectangular square in front and a row of antique houses on both sides. This church is the finest examples of the Indian Baroque style. The main altar of this Church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The church can be entered from the side entrance to the north. In the church the huge cross dates from the late 17th century which is a great attraction. The feast is celebrated on the 10th of June.

Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim

About  Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim

The Mary Immaculate Conception Church was one of the first church to be built in Goa. The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is placed on the hillside. To reach the Church , one has to climb 100 steps arranged in a majestic fashion. Standing on the gallery of the church, you can see the entire view of the lovely Panjim city. The huge bell on the belfry once belonged to the Monastery of St. Augustine, Old Goa, and is second in size only to the Golden Bell of the Se Cathedral at Old Goa.


Mary Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim

The interior of the church is also beautiful.The main altar is honored to Mary Immaculate, and it has two more altars, on the left is Jesus crucified and to the right is Our Lady of the Rosary. On the both sides there are two marble statues, one of St. Peter and one of St. Paul. On the right of the main altar in the south transept there is a Chapel of St. Francis Xavier.

The feast of The Immaculate Conception is celebrated every year on 8th Dec. There is a 3 day fete where people from all walks of life come to witness the sheer splendor of the Church. During the feast the whole church is beautifully decorated inside and the exterior is very artfully lit. Novenas are celebrated everyday during the week before the feast.

St. Augustine Tower

About St. Augustine Tower, Old Goa

The Tower of the Church of St. Augustine is 400 years old. The construction began in 1597 and it continued till 1602. Unfortunately, the name of the designer remains unknown although it is assumed that the brilliant architect was from Italy. The tower is one of the four of St. Augustine Church that once stood there. There were eight richly adorned chapels and four altars, and a convent with numerous cells and artistic columns attached to the church. Continued neglect turned the church into a ruined structure around 1842. Though the church was almost destroyed, the facade remained intact. In 1871, the huge bell of the Tower of the Church of St. Augustine was transferred to the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Panjim where it remains and can be seen and heard today. Half of the tower collapsed in 1931 and today, travelers from all over the world get to see only a part of the once great tower.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

About Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa

The Basilica of Bom Jesus or Basilica of Good Jesus is located in Old Goa, around nine kilometers from Panaji.The Jesuit church is India’s first Minor Basilica, and is considered as one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India.It contains the mortal remains of Goa's patron St. Francis Xaviera very close friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).This is one of the oldest churches in Goa and is carpeted with marble flooring and inlaid with precious stones.The church also holds paintings with scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier.
