The Goa State Central Library is one of the oldest existing public library in India. It was inaugurated on 15th September 1832 by Viceroy Dom Manuel de Portugal e Castro, it was then called Publica Livraria. Now this library has been shifted to a new complex in Patto, Panaji. It was inaugurated by chief minister Manohar Parrikar on 23 April 2012. The new library is named as Krishnadas Shama state central library. It is named after Krishnadas Shama, a prolific writer of Konkani prose and Marathi poetry of the 16th century. The new complex is a five-storied building with all hi-tech facilities. This complex also has a sixth mezzanine floor dedicated to house rare Portuguese books.
